Transition Year Curriculum 2010-2011


Subject: Gaeilge

Length of Course: Full Academic Year

Teacher(s): Ms. Olivia Daniels and Ms. AnnMarie Mulconroy

Aims of the Course:

  • To promote spoken Irish.
  • To encourage groupwork (working with peers) through the medium of Irish.
  • To enhance students knowledge of Irish culture.
  • To allow students to take responsibility for their learning.
  • To promote a positive learning environment where each students voice is heard and all students get involved in decision making and carrying out of tasks.
  • To promote cross-curricular links.

Course Outline:

  • To write and submit a film script for the Gael Linn ‘Comórtas Scannánaíochta’.
  • To enter the ‘Clár Raidió’ competition (TG4).
  • To organise various activities for Seachtain na Gaeilge such as a Céilí and Tráth na gCeist for First Years.
  • To read some of the Béaloideas stories and increase students knowledge of Stair na Gaeilge.
  • To complete Irish grammar exercises with students.
  • To organise and compete in Gael Linn debates and also carry out debates amongst class members to allow students the opportunity to discuss topical issues through Irish. This will have benefits when students progress onto the Leaving Certificate course.

Visiting speakers/Outdoor trips etc:

  • Visit to TG4
  • Invite Branar (Irish company) to school to do workshops with students to promote a particular area of Irish. (Drama workshop/Workshop on speaking the Irish language/Workshop on Irish grammar- Yet to be decided).
  • Trip to see an Irish play in the Taibhdhearc.

Cross-Curricular Aspects:

  • To link up with the Music department for Seachtain na Gaeilge (to provide music for the Céilí) and also for the Clár Raidió (to put music into the radio add the class put together).
  • To link with the Home Ec department to produce food to sell at Céilí (Seachtain na Gaeilge).
  • To link with the Enterprise class to do promotion and to sell tickets for the Ceilí for Seachtain na Gaeilge.

  • Formal Oral Exam
  • Listening exam
  • Assessment of participation in Project Work
