Orlaith Connors Shines at SciFest Ireland 2024!
Gort Community School is incredibly proud to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our 3rd Year student, Orlaith Connors, who has been recognised with the Mallinckrodt Award for Excellence in STEM at the SciFest Ireland national finals last week.
Orlaith’s winning scientific Study, MITES BEE GONE, investigated Irish Honey Bees for heritable traits of hygienic behaviour. It won the overall best project at the regional Scifest in ATU in May 2024. This investigation focused on Native Irish Honey bees natural ability to protect themselves from disease instead of requiring chemical treatment. Orlaith impressed the judges with her high-level execution, deep understanding of STEM principles, and innovative approach.
Having previously been named Junior Beekeeper of the Year at the FIBKA Summer School in 2023, Orlaith represented Gort Community School and County Galway with distinction in the student enterprise programme in 2022 with Orlaiths Derrybrien Honey. Orlaith’s business included everything from the management of bees to the production of honey, wax candles, and eco-friendly wax wraps. After winning the Galway Junior Category, she advanced to the national finals in Croke Park, securing a fantastic second place. Judges commended her in-depth knowledge of responsible beekeeping practices, including the management of bee diseases, and her commitment to preserving the native black bee (Apis Mellifera Mellifera).
Orlaith has also been an inspiration within our school community. She presented her project to teachers and students, educating us on the importance of responsible beekeeping in Ireland and sharing insights into the fascinating world of bees. Beyond the school, Orlaith has been featured on Galway Bay FM and RTE News2Day, further raising awareness about her work.
