Gort Community School are delighted to have commenced construction of phase one of their school extension. GCS was initially approved a major extension in June 2019 to cater for 900 pupils. However, in June 2021 the specifications and design brief for this project was significantly upgraded to cater for a projected enrolment of 1200 pupils. This will be a significant addition for the community of South Galway and North Clare.
OCC Construction have been appointed to complete Phase One of the project, a Hall Structure, that will temporarily accommodate six classrooms and also as part of Phase One, two temporary Science labs and prep area and a temporary Technology room will be built. Once Phase Two is completed these temporary six classrooms will be converted into a Hall for the school.
This will increase the capacity of the school by 9 additional rooms for September 2022.
The new extension will have a footprint of 5500m2, which is bigger than the existing school building. The building is currently being designed and management are working through the various statutory steps to deliver this facility for the school and the community.
The Major extension will consist of 41 new rooms including: 19 General classrooms, 9 meeting rooms, a DP Office, a 3 Classroom SEN base, an Art Room, a Home Economics room, a Graphics room, 3 Science lab/2 Prep area rooms, a Construction studies /Prep area room, an Engineering room, a Tech Prep room, 3x Project stores, a New Staff room, a General Purpose /Dining area along with alterations to the Existing Building and Fitness suite.
