Annual Minor Camogie Tournament 2012

On Wednesday February 8th and Friday February 10th, 40 first & second year girls participated in a 10 a side camogie tournament played on the astro turf at Gort Community School.  Both semi finals were played on the Wednesday, with the third place play off & final being concluded on the Friday.  A late Francesca Glynn point gave Anna Clancy’s team a 1-2 to 1-1 victory over Ashling Rock’s team in a very competitive third place game.  Blathnid Burke was the star of the final scoring 1-4 from play.  This helped her side captained by Claire Higgins to a 4-4 to 2-1 victory over Katie Nelly’s team.

The event was enjoyable for all the girls concerned.  Hopefully it will act as a useful warm up for the 1st and 2nd year Connacht championships that are coming up in the next month or so.

First Year Camogie Blitz

October 25, 2011

Gort Community School 1st year camogie squad entered two teams into the Mairead Meehan 7 a side tournament held in Athenry.

The B team acquitted themselves well.  They lost narrowly to St. Brigids & Oranmore.  They finished the day with a 5-1 to 2-0 win over Pres Athenry.  Sarah Fahey, Kelly Shearer & Michelle Fahey getting their scores in that game.

The A team had a very successful day.  Victories over Portumna CS by 5-0 to 3-0, Oranmore by 5-0 to 1-4, St. Brigids by 3-4 to 1-0 & Presentation Athenry B team by 9-4 to 1-0 qualified them for the final of the competition.  Most of the scores came from Polly Edge O’Neill & Marie Farrell.  In the final however a strong Athenry team stifled the south Galway girls completely.  The home side won on a score line of 2-5 to 1-0.

It was an impressive performance from the squad considering it was their first piece of competitive action in the school colours.  It augurs well for the first year competition which will be played after Christmas.
