About Project Maths

• Provides a greater coherence between Primary school and in the Post-Primary school

• Makes Maths more relevant to life

• Emphasis on understanding of mathematical concepts and the application of mathematical knowledge and skill

• Encourage more students to study Higher Level: 60% at Junior Cert. and 30% at Leaving Cert.

Project Maths:  Timeline for Changes

September 2010:

          Strand 1: Statistics and Probability

          Strand 2: Geometry & Trigonometry

September 2011:

          Strand 3: Number

          Strand 4: Algebra

September 2012:

          Strand 5: Functions                         Phased over three Years

What does it mean for me?

• A common course in Maths for all First Years before they choose what level to follow

• The revised syllabus in Junior Cert. will be at two levels only, however a foundation level will initially continue to be provided

• At Leaving Cert. three levels will continue to be provided
